My Work

In 1996 I began my new career as a school teacher.

My first year in teaching was spent at King's College School, Wimbledon, in South West London.

I really enjoyed my time there, and would have stayed on if that had been possible.

I'd been employed for one year, to fill-in while another teacher went off to Brazil to try to make a new life there. If he wished he could return at the end of the year and reclaim his post at KCS. If he decided not to return then I would be employed permanently.

On the last day, he faxed the school to say he wished to return, and thus I was in the position of finding a new job. Way to go, Richard!

I applied to Victoria College, Jersey,  a semi-independent boys secondary school, and got the job.

As you can see it's a nice place to work. Sitting on top of a hill, overlooking St Helier town, and with views over St Aubin Bay, it is a whole world away from London.

In addition to teaching some 6th Form girls from Jersey College for Girls, we have 7 girls enrolled in our 6th Form as an "experiment". Despite the obvious success of the experiment it is not to be repeated. Go figure.

I teach Economics and Business Studies in the 6th Form only. I have 2 sets in LVI Economics and 2 in the UVI. In Business Studies I have 1 LVI set and 2 UVI sets. Sets vary in size from 4 to 15 students.

I am also a tutor (pastoral supervisor) for 23 "year ten" boys. Year 10 are aged 15/16. They're a nice bunch of lads.

More recently I've joined the Combined Cadet Force Navy Section. This lets me play on boats on a Friday afternoon. The Section has a Whaler, a RIB and 2 Dorys. They also use sailboats but I've not been allowed to play with them yet.

By the end of the summer I should have my power-boat certificate.

Here is a daylight view across St Helier from, broadly, the same vantage point. You can see the white dome of Fort Regent clearly and St Aubin's Bay on the right.

This is a picture of some of the Victoria College CCF Navy Section aboard the section's whaler. Every Friday afternoon the section go out and exercise on the boats - 2 dorys, a RIB and the whaler.

I took this picture one winter afternoon as I was leaving school. It's a beautiful view over Fort Regent (the dome in the middle) and St Aubin's Bay  (just visible in the bottom right)
